What this means for your portfolio

Withholding tax: the essentials

Withholding tax isn't an extra tax, it's a kind of deposit. The federal government withholds 35 percent on interest and dividends so no one hides capital income. Anyone who declares it gets the amount back. Anyone who doesn't pays it for good.

Who gets the money back

Anyone who was resident in Switzerland when the dividend became due and was the beneficial owner of the security is entitled to it. The canton responsible is the one where you lived on 31 December of the year the payment became due.

How the reclaim works

You enter all accounts and securities in the securities and assets register of your tax return and declare the gross income, i.e. the dividend before deduction. In the cantonal tax software, the claim is already included in this. The amount is usually offset against your tax bill rather than paid out separately.

The deadline

The claim lapses three years after the end of the year in which the income arose. Anyone who hasn't claimed a 2023 dividend by the end of 2026 loses the 35 percent for good.

Common mistakes

Declaring only the net amount instead of gross. Declaring the dividend but forgetting the security under wealth. Or assuming the bank handles the reclaim automatically. Different rates and separate procedures apply to foreign stocks; this calculator covers Swiss holdings.
